FR ACP Sheet stands for Fire-Retardant Aluminium Composite Panel. It’s a specific, safer grade of ACP designed to inhibit the spread of fire, making it suitable for many architectural applications where standard PE-core panels would be a hazard.
What Makes it “Fire-Retardant”?
The key difference is in the core material. Unlike standard ACPs with a highly flammable polyethylene (PE) core, an FR ACP has a core infused with fire-retardant mineral fillers (typically a blend of minerals like aluminium trihydrate – ATH).
- Mechanism: When exposed to flame, the FR core chars and forms a protective, non-combustible barrier. It also releases water vapor (a process called “endothermic reaction”), which cools the material and dilutes flammable gases. This causes the panel to self-extinguish once the external flame source is removed.
Fire Performance & Certifications
FR ACPs are rigorously tested to meet international building safety standards. Common certifications include:
- BS 476 (Parts 6 & 7): Achieves Class 0 or Class 1 ratings for surface spread of flame and fire propagation.
- ASTM E84: Often achieves a Class A rating (the highest for this standard) for flame spread and smoke development.
- UL 94: Rated V-0, indicating it stops burning within 10 seconds on a vertical test, with no dripping of flaming particles.
- Local National Codes: Must comply with specific country regulations (e.g., NFPA in the US, Euroclass in the EU).
Typical Specifications
- Total Thickness: Commonly 3mm, 4mm, or 6mm.
- Aluminium Skin: Usually 0.25mm to 0.5mm thick per side, with a PVDF or PE coating.
- Core Composition: ~70-75% mineral-filled polyethylene (the exact proprietary blend varies by manufacturer).
Primary Applications
FR ACP is the minimum recommended standard for most exterior building facades (cladding), especially in:
- Mid-rise commercial and residential buildings (subject to local height regulations).
- Shopping malls, hospitals, schools, and hotels.
- Interior applications where fire safety is a concern (e.g., tunnel linings, metro stations, large atriums).
- Signage and industrial uses where a standard PE panel is deemed too risky.
Advantages Over Standard PE Core ACP
- Enhanced Safety: Dramatically reduces the risk of rapid fire spread up the facade.
- Regulatory Compliance: Meets building codes for a wider range of structures than standard PE core.
- Smoke Reduction: Produces less toxic smoke compared to burning PE core.
- Widely Available: The most common type of “safe” ACP specified for general construction.
Limitations & Considerations
- Not Fully Fireproof: Under extreme and prolonged fire conditions, it can eventually be compromised. For very tall buildings or those with highest safety requirements, A2-grade panels are mandated.
- Cost: More expensive than standard PE-core ACP, but less costly than premium A2-grade panels.
- Verification: It is crucial to demand and verify test certificates from the supplier/manufacturer for the specific product batch. The term “FR” is sometimes misused.
